Jennifer Walton’s Jacksonville Beach restaurant is re-branding itself as “Bacon in the Sun,” but before she could put the new sign up, a thief tried to break in.

Surveillance video shows a man in a dark hoodie throwing bricks at the restaurant’s window.

“This is the second time I’ve had rocks thrown at my window,” Walton said. “Thankfully, my glass is very strong.”

The thief never made it inside, but managed to break into two other nearby businesses, from which he stole hundreds of dollars.

Action News Jax has been telling you about a spike in smash-and-grab style burglaries in Jacksonville Beach.

According to Jax Beach police records, there have been 41 break-ins to businesses this year.

For all of last year, there were 31.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said more of this criminal activity can be expected around the holidays as people get desperate.

Jacksonville Beach police tell Action News Jax they use different patrol tactics in an effort to ward off this activity around the holidays.
